Forsyth was first commissioned as a First Lieutenant in 1861, and achieved the brevetted rank of Brigadier General of Volunteers at the close of the war. Forsyth fought in numerous cavalry actions in the Shenandoah Valley, and all of the major campaigns of the Army of the Potomac. Forsyth served as the Aide-de-Camp to General Philip Sheridan in both the Civil War and later in the Indian Conflicts. Forsyth's service to the United States was equally noteworthy during his service in the westward campaigns, and he achieved the rank of Brevet Brigadier General in the regular Army in 1868. Forsyth received his permanent promotion to Lieutenant Colonel to the 4th U'S Cavalry in 1881. In 1904 he was promoted to Colonel on the retired list." (7A7)"
